Your profession skill goes up everytime you sell your resources at the traders, the higher your level, the faster you "process" your resources. Sadly it doesn't allow you to mine faster, nor gives you an extra. :P

That wouldn't be a "drag" race. Drag races are done on straight roads for only a couple hundred meters hahah. Anyway, cool and fun idea though. :P

It's really up to you, my salt training is very high so I could've refined it all in less than 2minutes. I would like a full compensation and yes, I could've gotten robbed or crashed my vehicle but we'll never know what would've happened due to the server crash.

I've had this problem too. I simply had to close and log off of Steam, log back into Steam and run Arma, it seems to be working for me thus far.

I've had the same problem yesterday and today, there simply isn't anything you could do about it unless you may have recorded it and post a compensation request - but even then you're not sure whether they'll refund you or not.
