For £600-£800 you're not looking at a wide variety, especially if you're only looking to play Arma 3 (seeing as it is mainly CPU based)

Hey Phalanx, if you take a look in Tech Discussion, @lionel and myself have put together plenty of machines around this budget. You can definitely get an intel CPU in your budget, but if you're wanting to buy the whole shamolly I would actually recommend one of these new fangled AMD Ryzen processors. With a new microcode update, they are getting better and better, and are a fraction of the cost of their High-end Intel equivalents.

I will also see if i can throw together something quickly

So it's been a long time since i've put together an AMD machine so if i've screwed anything up I'm sure @lionel or @CMO Marc Smith can straighten it out. This is a teensy bit over your max budget, but you can change things as you see fit. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/MhHPGf it's a rough first draft.

I'm not sure how good the amd stock cooler is, so you may not need the noctua - lopping £70 off, I've stuck with some brands I know and trust, and there's some stuff not included there such as a screen and peripherals, if you need all of those, it might be tricky to pinch the pennies elsewhere without crippling the machine. I wouldnt want to spec you an out of date mobo/cpu since it's inherently cheaper to upgrade the peripherals than the core components imho.

i.e. if you can put up with a shitty £20 kb+mouse combo from Tesco and save up for a nice gaming kb and mouse later down the line, do that rather than drop down the CPU etc.

I'm not sure what you have in the way of drives etc, so you can modify that as you see fit.

You can probably pick a cheaper case - i am a big fan of Corsair cases and this one didnt throw up any issues. If you drop the CPU cooler, you can probably get a case at half the price, saving you ~£150.

GPU wise, it's no secret i love me some intel and nvidia, my knowledge of AMD GPUs is a bit withered, i *think* the 480 is good, but again, you're best checking with additional sources.

I went for 16GB of RAM in 2x8 at a decent speed and price point imo. Pus the red DIMMS will look ace against the mobo i picked. OF course you cna change these if Red+Black aint your colours.

Also, not forgetting the interests of legitimate software - if you dont have one, you will need to buy a windows licence. If you can spring for it - i recommend Windows 10 Professional.

Like I said, rough draft that'll need some refinement, but the bonus of the AMD hardware is y ou can take advantage of FreeSync Monitors which are substantially cheaper than GSync. FYI, AOC have a 27" 1440p monitor for £200 which im in the process of convincing myself to buy :)

Pretty much what Zeito said. Can drop a bit of money on case and cooler probably if you need to. Can even push to saving a bit on PSU though I wouldn't recommend it, I've had cheap PSU purchases blow up in my face (literally).

Again, I haven't touched an AMD build for a while but as far as I can tell that seems fairly balanced at the budget. Idk how ryzen cpu's are performing in arma though, but should be fine.

@CMO Marc Smith I figured 600W leaves some overhead on a 400w build, meaning if the GPU is changed for something beefier later on, the PSU wont need changed also. BeQuiet are a pretty good maker of Cases and cooling components, so i figured their PSUs are probably good as well.

I don't think I'll need the 16 gigs of ram tbh, maybe 8'll do maybe?

For any modern build I'd always recommend 16Gb now. Applications are utilising so much more ram than they used to so you'll find yourself using your page file quite often if you only have 8Gb, which isn't ideal.

Zeito

Yeah i'd highly recommend you move to 16gb minimum nowadays. I did consider only 8, but didnt want to leave it tight. You can always lop it down to 8, see how you get on and put another 8gb of the same memory on your upgrade list for the future. 👍

@Phalanx pretty good for the price, Great CPU - GPU is mid-range, but will run arma happily. Great price. I say go for it - you can always upgrade it later. Consider as well you will still need to purchase a screen and peripherals if you dont have them :)

but end of it all yes its a very good cooler, plenty of headroom for expected dissipation, which leaves you free to OC. So drop the aftermarket cooler and pay out for a SSD for windows installation instead, imo. saving you £70

The nice thing about the 1700 is that it has a low power usage so you can get away with a cheaper PSU. P.s. always buy bigger though, Don't go out and buy a 400W PSU. 500W is a nice number saving you another £12 - but should you want to upgrade your CPU later to say 1700X/1800X or do some serious overclocking then you should go for either the 600W or higher.

Finally, I would like to recommend moving to 8GB for the GPU (if you can afford it) as so many games are Ram heavy, case in point: Rainbow six siege already on ultra uses 4.8GB of ram (This is from memory plz don't shout at me if I'm wrong, but I know it's over 4GB) and that game is already over 1 year old. I have the RX480 8GB myself and love the amount RAM. this will cost you £30 to upgrade to 8GB of ram.

Cases...... Personally I really Don't Give a shit, Put it in a cardboard box for all I care, as long as it gets good airflow and protects it to a reasonable degree, fuck it spend as little as possible at this point on the case. Saving you up to £70 for your cardboard build ;) or whatever cheap pos you go for potentially.

Fuck it built another on pc part picker :/

Please note, this can be made much cheaper e.g. downing the Ram to 8GB or ditching the M.2 NVME drive, But please note this is going to be a damn fast build and should easily last a good 4 years before you would need to consider upgrading. (This is a expectation not a guarantee).

p.s. Don't forget going to a single retailer may actually be cheaper in the long run as you will keep your shipping costs down, please also keep in mind if you need to do any returns going with a well known seller can give you confidence that you will get usable service.

CCL in the past has been painful to work with, I view them with the same regard as Ebuyer after I tried to return and re-order an Item (although plenty of other techs have not had issues with Ebuyer)

Personally I would recommend Scan, Super fast delivery, So far not 1 hiccup with getting faulty items replaced always fast so far, usually quite cheap, cheaper than Ebuyer historically on full builds; but not the cheapest out there.
