You knew what you was doing. you drove out the way to the garage. the route to Piers doesnt involve passing the garage in paros.

as you can see in the video - i was a witness to this.  he was giving you a hint - to not proceed in taking his weapon or shit would go down. but trying to do so in a way that the police wouldn't flip out and call back up or start shooting - but the police continued to do so, so they were shot.
