Just wondering why?

I was fruit picking and then about four men appeared and was checking out my car, I got spooked and so drove off, they chased me down. I got out and they said put your hands up or we will kill you.

I put my hands up and they said that they will only take my ID card and nothing else.

What will they do with the ID card?
