Please bear with me on this as it could get to be a bit long winded.
I had an idea yesterday based off inspiration by Kseniya's post in here. So i want to say thank you to her in the first instance.
Now - the idea behind this is to lengthen the manufacturing process of items in order to give people an opportunity to be involved in different parts of the chain and thus provide opportunities for people to meet each other and cut deals in game. Ideally there would be more opportunity to bring people together within the activity proposed.
So we have wood at the moment and we cut it into planks. Planks are fine they go off and do some other stuff not relevant to this post. What if those planks could then be turned into PAPER? Now we have a whole new product. But before the paper becomes ROLLING PAPER it needs to have something to make it sticky, glue/gum/adhesive whatever you want to call it. So now we need to go to the glue factory - perhaps the BUTCHER can sell this? If people take animal parts to the butcher maybe he/she can pay them a decent wedge for their animal parts which he can melt down into GLUE (I understand this is already in game). People would then be able to buy the GLUE and craft the PAPER and make ROLLING PAPER. They could then take the ROLLING PAPER and combine it with another substance/herb on the island and create ready rolled JOINTS. These could possibly fetch either A) a higher price than the bulk purchases that are currently offered by the various people who buy these things or maybe 1kg of MARIJUANA could make 2-3kg of JOINTS which sell individually for a lower price but collectively for more than the price at the current store. For example if MARIJUANA sells for £100 a bag and then you make 3 joints out of it, or 5 joints or whatever, maybe these can sell for £150 - as an illustrative price.
Going a step further it may then be possible to sell these JOINTS individually on the streets (to locals) and people could be street dealers, along with the current bulk supply and demand of the store etc.
Having additional steps in the chain may feel convoluted for some, but I would not interfere with the current mechanic of bulk sales, however if there are others who want to get into this supply chain for RP rather than profit then there may be areas where they could find that a group of people could organise one end of the supply chain whilst another group distributed products at the other end.
