SSD or GPU upgrade?

Hi everyone :)

So i'm looking to upgrade my pc, I have a rather small budget and im looking to get an SSD or a new GPU. So here's what I have now:

i7-3770k 3.4Ghz

8GB RAM

7200RPM Toshiba 1TB HDD

(One 3.5" slot left)

GTX 650 Ti

Not the best, but i'm on a rather tight budget (can't give numbers because I don't really know them yet) so i'd like to know what you would reccomend I upgrade.

Oh also heard good things about Windows 10, what are peoples thoughts, think I need to upgrade from 7 :)

Either upgrade would have their benefits to that current build.

If you want some faster data read/write times (faster loading of OS and any programs on the SSD), go for the SSD.

If you want better graphics performance and higher FPS in most games, go for the graphics card.

Just out of interest - what GPU and SSD were you planning on going for?

It comes down to what you are looking for.

GPU - Better fps

SSD - Faster boot time, read/write speeds.

In my opinion get a new GPU

Edit: Free upgrade to Windows 10, i haven't had one single issue with it so far and i get better performance all around from w7.

Upgrade then do a fresh install for best results.

Cheers guys, would have to backup a lot of shit onto external drives for fresh install though not sure if I can...

Not sure which is what I was wondering... I can get them a bit cheaper from PC Specialist where I originally bought my pc from but money is still the issue, mainly for the GPU. Never installed a GPU on a pc before (or anything except old shitty HDDs etc into an old pc when I rebuilt it) so that's also a concern but that's easy fixed with youtube :)

GTX 970 if you can afford, great card.

 
£230, better than expected although i'd be shitting myself incase I broke it :p  

Edit: I have 550W PSU and this needs 145, with a minimum system psu of 500W so I guess i'm ok, but want to check.

Also got to check if it'll fit in my case but should be good.

GPU's are a doddle to install, even a muppet like myself can put on in. It's pretty much a click out click in job. Just make sure you have enough space though as when I installed my 970 on my other build it was pretty tight for space.

That's good to hear :D

We'll see what happens and i'll enquire further about that when I get it :)

 
I can second the 970 as an excellent card. You have a rock solid CPU there, and it's a 'k' edition which means an unlocked multiplier. Depending on how good your cooler is you could overclock that for some better speeds if you needed to.

GPU install is a piece of cake. Just take your time. Look at how your existing one is fitted. THEY ALMOST CERTINALY HAVE A LATCH SO DONT JUST BLOODY PULL IT! You need to unlatch the PCI-E slot, remove the screw, then you just pull it straight out, maybe with a slight front/back wiggle.

I just build a PC with a 550W PSU and a 970 with a 4790k and the PSU is more than capable. I think you'll be okay with 500W.

Couple more questions for a newbie to hardwarey stuff:

  • How many cabley things to attach to the GPU... (PCI-E?) How to find out, I assume manuals etc.
  • Static wrist band or just grab a bit of metat/the case, what's better?
  • I know I should really clean the inside of my case (1.5 years without it...) but how is the best way?
It looks like it'll fit inside (at double the length of my 650Ti (!)). Thanks for helping though everyone, i'm such a noob.

Edit: For number 1 I found this? I'm guessing this is it as it says 1x6 pin for my 650 which is accurate.

GTX 970 requires two 6-pin PCIe connectors. Is your PSU fully modular, semi modular or non modular?

Static wrist band is better peace of mind, but touching an unpainted bit of metal will work the same.

1.5 Years without cleaning omg must be a dust factory, get a few cans of compressed air and go to work.

Edit: Download Speccy gives us the info be much easier to you knowing yoir full specs :D
